Day 1 – Monday 21 May
Day 1 of the Defence Space Conference 2018 is intended to set the scene and provide [attendees] the key elements of the developing strategic intent and strategy MOD is taking on Space, both as a domain and an environment. The day will focus on current and planned activities and will open with a selection of influential keynote speakers. There will be sessions on the Space domain challenges and the services Defence use, or aspire to use, with the aim to explore the military and civilian nature of Space and the activities required to address future challenges. In addition, there will be a session on international collaboration that looks to examine the importance of this activity some of the current areas of collaboration and seek ideas on how we might approach our international engagement in the future. The day will close with a Q&A panel to provide conference attendees an opportunity to explore some of the more pertinent points raised during the day.
Day 2 – Tuesday 22 May
Day 2 will focus on the future, disruptive technologies and the pull through of innovative ideas from the industrial sector into military capability, especially as we look to modernise Defence. Again we hope to open with some influential and thought provoking keynote speakers. This will be followed with sessions to focus on innovation, doing things differently; ways to improve speed and cost effectiveness of procurement; and on the new big bets we haven’t even considered yet. Either session may pick up on some of the challenges and concerns raised on day 1, to consider solutions. However we hope that the new areas will stimulate thought. We also wish to inspire the next generation of military staff and educate the whole community. The conference will close with a summary of key themes from Mr Nick Ayling Head of Space & Cyber Policy.
